Terradactyl

Serengeti and Polyphonic

Chicago natives Serengeti and Polyphonic united their Jedi minds to record their second full-length album Terradactyl for Anticon Records. This record stretches traditional hip-hop boundaries, taking listeners to a stratosphere few have dared to reach. Serengeti (David Cohn) seems to don on a different personality for each cut, when in fact he is appearing as his most vulnerable self, wedged between multiple dilemmas. His counterpart, Polyphonic (Will Freyman), harnesses the turmoil by delivering beauty through his own brand of off-tempo beats, at times with accordion, plucked strings and baroque harp. The stream of consciousness rhyme leaves the listener helplessly surrendering to Serengeti's cynicism. As Polyphonic's score intensifies, the barrier between noise and reality slowly strips away.

All Aboard Future

These Are Powers

These Are Powers’ third record on Dead Oceans, “All Aboard Future” is just what the title suggests, taking the listener into the seeming future of glam synth pop. It is a future that contains a plethora of noises where These Are Powers managed to inject their own organic flavor. “Light After Sound” could very well be a part of the soundtrack in a David Lynch film with its uncomfortable white noise backdrop and eerie verse. The highlight of the record being the unnatural beauty of “Parallel Shores” where the listener will find sincerity within arm’s length. One might get lost in a parallel universe of almost grating (i.e. Double Double Yolk) and incredibly catchy (i.e. Easy Answer). But this just adds to the intensity of the record, creating contrast, all well within parameters.
